- Do you have deaf customers, clients or visitors?
- Do your staff need training for any contact they may have with deaf people?
- Are you looking for a very experienced training organisation to provide this?
Deafworks has an established reputation for its in-depth Deaf Awareness training. Although we work within a general framework for our courses, we always tailor the content to meet the needs of the organisations who book us – we expect to discuss with you precisely what your staff need.
Aim
Communication and access to information are the two central issues for deaf people. Our Deaf Awareness training focuses on these two areas, and provides course participants with a greater understanding of deafness.
Topics covered
We would expect to cover these areas:
- Introduction to deafness
- Different groups of hearing impaired / deaf people
- Ways of communicating : lipreading, signing, fingerspelling
- Awareness of the environment of buildings / accessibility
- Telephone skills and access for deaf clients / colleagues
- Interpreters and communication services
- Local and national contacts
- Making your service or organisation “deaf-user friendly”
Themes
During the workshop we will look at:
- Facilitating access to information
- Assisting clients and others
- Practical experience of communication skills
- Action plans
“By the end of each course, participants will have a handbook to take away with them (unless you prefer powerpoint, in which case we can offer that instead). Delegates should be able to understand the different types of deafness and to be able to negotiate the most appropriate means of communication. They should have an awareness of the constraints of lipreading, fingerspelling and signing.”
If you have deaf staff, a more focused workshop “Working with a Deaf Colleague” may be more appropriate. Email or call us to tell us exactly what you are looking for.
