Hi Folks – we are now half way through the year. How did that happen? we ask ourselves. (“It just did”)
What might we want to think about before (if you haven’t already gone) and after (if you’re already back) your Summer holidays?
Train to Gain : mentoring for senior deaf Managers & Directors : last chance
D/deaf senior managers (with strategic responsibilities) living or working in London can now apply for government funding for coaching with the Deafworks Director. Have a look at http://www.deafworks.co.uk/our-services/deaf-professionals-training/ for further information – we recommend you hurry before the Government cuts start to bite! Email us and say “Yes, I’m interested!” and we can turn the paperwork round very quickly.
Forensic Lipreaders
Solicitors and others ask if we offer a forensic lipreading service. Yes we do – just pick up the phone and talk to Nick Callow on 02076890033 and find out how we can help you. Deafworks also trained a carefully selected group of deaf people to become forensic lipreaders and their information can be found on http://lipreaders.wordpress.com. They are highly skilled not only in lipreading, but also in managing video material and producing detailed reports.
Problem Page
I used to be the agony aunt for a well known deaf magazine and the letters just kept on coming! People often say “I don’t know where to go for advice”. Nearly all the deaf organisations have good signposting services and will tell you where to go (if they can). If you are a deaf professional then Deafworks runs a facebook group to discuss employment questions. The Deafworks website also has a problem page so you could post your problem there and I will answer (changing details to preserve your confidentiality) very quickly. In the meantime here’s some advice!
- Write down your problem (you’d be amazed how difficult it is to write down the issues clearly)
- Put your points in order (this can take several hours or days)
- Think how you are going to tackle the first point
- Check with a trusted friend or colleague that this might be the right step
- Try it and see what the results are
- Ask yourself if your second point on your list is still important
- You may find the first step was all that was needed
- If you need to take the second step then go through the cycle again
Improve Your BSL
Paul Redfern wrote a brilliant guide to learning BSL, and we have never stopped selling it. Check it out on http://www.deafworks.co.uk/buy-improve-your-bsl-here/, or look on Amazon or Forest Books if you prefer.
This is what we say:
“An easy-to-read practical guide for people learning BSL
Let us introduce you to the easiest and most helpful guide ever written for students of BSL…
- Over 50 exercises to support your learning in class
- A tip in every section
- Examples of how to structure BSL questions
- A section on Frequently Asked Questions (including where you can meet Deaf people)
- Sections on Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community included.
And it’s priced at £6 inc p+p, reduced from £8.50. Just send a cheque for £6 payable to “Nicholas Callow” to Deafworks, Studio 12, 65 Rivington Street, London EC2A 3QQ. PS : BSL Tutors love it too!
See you next month and email me on LC@deafworks.co.uk if you want to share something with me.
Laraine Callow, Director Deafworks
