Improve Your BSL!

An easy-to-read practical guide for people learning British Sign Language.
Reduced from £8.50 to £5 (plus £1 p&p)

Let us introduce you to the easiest and most helpful guide ever written for students of BSL…

  • Over 50 exercises to support your learning in class
  • A tip in every section
  • Examples of how to structure BSL questions
  • A section on Frequently Asked Questions (including where you can meet Deaf people)
  • Sections on Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community included.

What sections are there?  Here are a few…

“Reading Fingerspelling Better”

This is included because so many (probably 80% of) students say they have a problem.  And so the section includes tried and tested methods that really do work!

“Improving Directions and Placement”

This explains how it actually works as many students tend to get confused about placement.  And the section gives ideas of how this can be improved by practising different exercises.

“BSL questions – some tips!”

Following on from the previous section on BSL structure, this is designed to illustrate how BSL questions may be structured, with examples.

“Unwritten rules in communicating”

Successful communication is not just about the language but also how people interact with each other, which is where understanding culture becomes important.  This section aims to introduce you to how Deaf people may communicate in a different way from hearing people.

Just a few of the sections, with many more on a wide variety of issues connected to learning BSL.

How does it work?

Each section is laid out in a two-page spread for easy reading, with five parts which identify the issues and ideas on how to improve that particular area of BSL.

Who is it for?

People who are learning BSL, BSL tutors, and others wanting to know more about BSL

What do Deaf BSL tutors say about it?

“Brilliant – I’m telling all my students to get a copy!”

“It really is great – I just wish that you had written this years ago!”

What do other students say?

“I am doing Level Three and still find this really helpful”

“I am emailing you to tell you how great it is”

To order: just send a cheque for £6 payable to “Nicholas Callow” to the address on the right.

Improve your BSL – can you please tell me if the said book is suitable for a pre level 3 student

Hmm a tricky one because it depends what kind of teaching you’ve had up to this point. Sometimes when we’ve taught pre level 3 students we have been rather surprised at their lack of understanding of grammatical structures (which means they find L3 difficult as you can no longer fudge your way through) but others are way ahead in their reception & productive skills. Depends where you are on the continuum, I’m afraid. Why not have a go as it is an inexpensive book so even if only two chapters help, it’ll still be worth a fiver/tenner!
