Ten Top Tips on choosing the right BSL class for you

Time is precious for all of us. And time lost can never be regained. People often ask me “How do I know if this is a good sign language class?” or even “What’s the best way of making sure I can afford the time to go to a class?”

1. Ask around

Ask people if they have been on a similar course. What did they learn from the tutor? What were the tutor’s strong points?

2. Don’t worry about communication

A good D/deaf tutor will always be responsive and will already be aware that hearing people coming on to their courses can be very apprehensive about how the communication will work. The tutors will already have worked out their strategies!

3. Is the class too large?

Any sign language class which has more than 15 people just gets too difficult to interrupt and ask your all-important questions.

4. What kind of back up will there be?

Does the tutor have materials available? Some are happy to answer queries on the spot or by email. Are they supportive and encouraging towards students?

5. Do they have up to date information?

Ask if the materials are up to date and check that it is their own materials, and not someone else’s poor quality photocopies.

6. What happens if the tutor is ill?

Check that if the BSL tutor is ill, what will happen? Do they have another tutor on standby and that classes will not be cancelled?

7. Which is better – day or evening classes?

Daytime classes can be more intensive so you take more in, and people can be more motivated to learn. If you want more time to learn then go to an evening classes, as they tend to be attended by people who have a more relaxed approach to learning signing

8. Is there support?
All good BSL courses will provide support for you as well as good quality homework.

9. Is the tutor deaf?

You’d be surprised! Check your tutor is a native BSL user

10. Be patient!

Yes, be patient with yourself. Learning sign language is extremely hard work and the tutor will be patient with you, but you will need to work hard, and practice your homework consistently.
