Top Tips for networking

and business cards

1. Networking is about meeting new people and saying hello to old friends & colleagues.

2. It is not about looking for work!

3. Never hand out your business card unless you are asked for one.

4. Write on the back of a business card (which you’ve been given), a description of your brief networking or something you’ve promised to do.

5. Be open and welcoming and relaxed.

6. Pay attention to what the person is telling you & don’t look over their shoulder.

7. Work (whether you work for an organisation or charity or your own business) is dependent on good relationships. People won’t give you work or even a contact, if they don’t like you. It is as simple as that.

8. When you get back to the office, send a nice short email to at least one person (and mean it).

9. If you have promised to do something, then do it!

10. If you don’t have a card (and feel it is not appropriate) then just type your details and make your own contact slips. You never know when someone will ask you for your email and you don’t have a pen handy.
