Listening and Responding Skills for Staff
pre-counselling skills - getting the best from one to one work with your students or clients.
  • Are you a hearing member of staff? Do you work with deaf adults or deaf children? Do you need some training to incorporate an understanding of deafness for one-to-one situations?
  • Laraine Callow (Director of Deafworks) runs courses providing an introduction to pre-counselling skills and the issues involved. She includes an understanding of counselling expectations of deaf people, perceptions of deafness and counselling, handling counselling situations. By the end of the course you will know how to: Give deaf people time, Use appropriate language, Encourage deaf clients to talk to you, Agree a useful way forward.
  • There are NO teaching of counselling methods and theory - the workshop focus on practical skills. The facilitator creates a safe place where people can feel free to discuss sensitive issues about working with deaf clients.

Laraine Callow is Director of Deafworks and an experienced group-worker and mentor and has 25 years experience in working with deaf children, adults and families, and was the Agony Aunt for the RNID's "See Hear" magazine.
